All the updates.

It has been a long while since I posted anything then some pictures! I think the last real blog post was before Luna’s surgery !

If you don’t remember – because it has been so long – the wound that Luna had on her leg ended up being because she had one very broken splint bone!

v. broken

That was a fun surprise ! Not. She was scheduled in for surgery a few days later and off she went! The clinic is literally right down the road from the barn which is nice. Not so nice is the fact that dingle berries tried to fold her self in half trying to come back out of the trailer after she went in. That was fun. Great way to give me a hear attack horse.

My vet was nice enough ( is it nice ?) to let me watch the surgery. My god was that nerve wracking. And running behind. Pete’s penis cutting took longer then they thought it would. Poor Pete. We couldn’t really see much due to how they drape them and the fact that the viewing window is on the same level as the surgical room. But maybe that was for the best to not be able to see much of it.

Everything went well, and I even got to keep the fragments that they took out. Which were a shocking amount. Don’t ask me what I am going to do with them, I just thought they were cool. #horsepeopleproblems

first five minutes of turnout….whhyyyyy

She came home and did really well on stall rest after the surgery which I was a bit shocked by. She did have one crazy moment in the cross ties when they are cleaning her stall and ripped her halter in half so that was great.

We did have to deal with some soft tissue damage from the broken chunks rubbing. I decided to spend my monies and we did shockwave which I have always found to make a big difference and an injection of Amnion that was suggest by my vet. She says that we wouldn’t have seen as much healing as we did if we had not done that. You can’t even see anything going on in that leg and she is sounder then I think she has ever been!

there is a fin up there

So now we have just been focusing on getting fit again, trying to find a saddle that works for us again and staying in one piece. She is not doing very good at the last thing, and is also being a pain about the second thing!

Things never go to plan

It’s been a while….again. Life, it’s busy. We went on holidays, work is busy, beagle is busy. Horse is still hurting herself.

Yup, she has done it again. For the third time in less then a year.

look at those antennas

It isn’t as major as the previous two times which is a nice change though. But it is still a bummer.

I think it has been a month since she cut herself. Maybe 3 weeks? She has had most of that time off since she did it the same day the farrier was out and her toes were a little tender after that and all of this wet weather.  See below on “wet”.

wtf mother nature you can stop raining for a bit now

Pretty sure that I might get swallowed by the mud monster sooner then later. The horses are over this. The only dry anywhere is on the path to the barn, and the barn itself. We needed the rain, but not this much rain, for this long. All that in the forecast for next week is RAINRAINRAIN.

At least she’s pretty.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes !

A lot has happened in the last week and a bit since I have sat down to write out any blog posts ! My life is always hectic, it’s just been a little bit more stressful lately.

I don’t think my horses back is sore anymore….

Luna is allowed back into “full work” again. We are just taking it extremely slow as I really would like to keep her back protected and gain as much proper muscling as we can without over doing it. Not a lot of fast work, mostly walk/trot and long and low trying to sretch out that back and work it better.

She has been feeling so much better since the vet was out. The difference has been crazy. I had had a lady out to do a PEMF treatment on her on Friday, my old trainer, who I’ve been using as a personal trainer to help myself, is coming to see her next weekend to give us a program and see how we are affecting each other. I feel so much better when I stick to her program, so I am looking forward to what she will do for the both of us.

contemplating life and clean saddle pads

My parents were down the weekend before Easter and we got to meet their new doggo Bella !

Bella the model

There was lots of beagle yelling as she was very put out that her grandma and grandpa would DARE bring a new dog into HER own house !

But the biggest change of all is horse related….we are moving barns! It’s been a change I’ve been thinking about for a while now, but it is finally coming to fruition !

Luna’s excited to move !

Answers.

Well the vet was out again on Thursday to do their thing and find out some more stuff on what has been going on with Luna lately.

Angry, drunk pony

The ultrasound showed some changes going on, better then the x-ray showed the week before. Right now the vet is only grading them as being mild changes.  Not exactly what a person wants to hear any day of the week.

We had a few different treatment options : shockwave, mesotherapy or injections. I chose to do the shockwave since it worked so well for Calika, and the mesotherapy.  The injections weren’t a necessity at this point, and from here on out we at least have a reference point to go off if the pain relapses at a later point. Which I hope it doesn’t.

The mesotherapy was interesting to watch – even for a person that does not like needles. She got a combination of traumeel, lidocaine and dex from about her T15 to L2-ish region. It is supposed to “reset the pain” according to my vet and give them a chance to start feeling better.

day after – she was feeling much better

She has definitely been feeling better. She’s been LEAVING THE BALE to come to me when I go out to get her. Yeah, the hippo mare is actually leaving food to come and greet me. AND nickering at me. WTF. I am confused.

Which then also makes me feel like a shit owner. She has been giving my signs that she hasn’t been happy for quite some time. I just thought it was something else. Hindsight is 20/20…but still…

pretty sure she is feeling better lol

I get to get back on her on Monday for three light days before slowly working her back into what she was doing before. We are hoping that being able to strengthen her back/SI area will stabilize everything and maybe we won’t have to do what we do, or inject anytime soon. Time will tell.

For now she gets to have a cool racing stripe down her back 😂

Nasty Mare Syndrome.

me to Luna lately

The above GIF is probably be best/only way to describe what my beast of a horse has turned into lately. Honestly.

She has never been one to have a shitty attitude while in heat. Ever. This year is clearly a whole different story though.  She is also in her second heat of 2019. How?! WHY?!!!!! Oh wait…..it’s because there is a gelding living in the mare pen. For the second winter in a row. Did I mention she also hates him? But her hormones say otherwise….

what she thinks of him

I’ve started her on a Magnesium supplement ( that her body worker suggested like a year ago) in hopes that it would help her anger to being brushed and maybe make her a happier pony. She’s only been on it for a couple of weeks now but I am seeing a difference. I can brush her without seeing the snake face at least so I am taking that as a win.

Little backstory – a couple, maybe 3, years ago, she came in one day in the spring with a weird swelling in front of her udders. Right about where her scar from her surgery as a foal was. She was also OBESE coming out of that winter. Asked one vet – thought it was just a fat deposit so we put her on a diet. Which just stressed her out and she ate very little over like 5 days not being in her normal pen. Hey….she did lose weight which was the ultimate goal so it counts right?

img_3995
2017…not her fattest

She lost some weight and it seemed to help. That vet thought maybe she was coming in her first heat and it was related to that. K, whatever. But then in the fall it came back in full force and this time it was warm. Cue me freaking out. Because what’s new there?

Had an other vet out and we decided to do an internal ultrasound. Which showed nothing. But the vet that she had been a broodmare before….because she must be fairly flappy back there.

Thing’s haven’t been too concerning since then. Occasionally I notice that it is maybe a bit more swollen then normal. But this winter she has been so incredibly grumpy. She was getting older meds when she was on stall rest which made no difference really, so we ruled out ulcers. Which I only chose to do because I wanted to get that worry off my mind – the vet didn’t think it was ulcers at all.

img_2889
because cute

Then she came back to work and it got worse – so out came the saddle fitter. Then she got better. Then she was even worse so I tried a new girth. Which made her better because she is clearly also a princess. In case you didn’t know that already. Then came the Magnesium.

It seems to be helping….let’s hope it stays that way. I want my nice pony back !

What day is it ?

It’s riding day !

Warm enough

That’s right. It’s pretty much warm enough the next couple of days to actually get on my horse. Sure, it’s a bit colder then I would like it to be to ride in, but the over night temperatures aren’t terrible and I’m sick of this not rising bs. It’s been two weeks ! We are both going stir crazy !

It’s been so cold out that this disgusting pee-berg was attached to the tail cord of one of my Rambo liners. Can you say YUCK. Mares are nasty beaches.

So keep your fingers cross that it will stay warm enough throughout the day that I can actually get on and ride !

Who pissed off Elsa ?

If it was you, can you please apologize ? Because I would really like to NOT have approximately 500 blankets on my horse anymore !!

By now, pretty much everyone’s been hit by some wonky weather….it just so happens to be that it is stuck over Alberta at the moment and isn’t planning on going away anytime soon.

We are both over it

We’ve had such a mild winter so far and I feel like this is mother nature making up for it. “Spring” has showed its face at least 3 times, just for winter to come roaring back in. Like last weekend when we got 12+cm of snow right before this cold snap.

I want this back

You can see Luna’s increasingly angry mare-face as each layer goes back on in the photo’s below.

Who else is stuck in this deep freeze with 500 blankets on their horse? I haven’t been on my horse for a week and I would really like to get back to riding soon please!
