2019 Things

Y’all have read, more then once probably, about why I don’t do goal setting. It just isn’t my thing. Aspirations are more my thing. They seem more open to change and modifications.

Get over the trailer issues – These cropped up again recently (as in at the flipping vet clinic) and were something that I really thought we had gotten over. Guess not. We need to address what is quite clearly making her not want to get in and fix it. Maybe we can get our own trailer this year?

Go to a show – I really want to do this this year. I want to show off all of the hard work that we have done. Being realistic though, it may or may not be in the budget. Plus we need to get through the trailer issues first. But it is a goal. Whether its one show, or ten shows, a dressage show or something else, as long as we get out and do something I do not care!

Continuing Education – One is never done learning when it comes to horses. In any way really. You think you understand something and then there is something new to learn ! I’ve already been working on that, and added an other tool to the box this past week that I will write about soon! Whatever way these things decide to come into my life, I will greet them with open arms!

Personal

Take care of my body – This is something I really do need to work on. My body isn’t happy with me. Since my car accident there have been a few different things that make me ache. Sometimes I ignore them though…which isn’t good for me in the long run. I want to be able to move when I am 75 and that means working on me in the NOW, not when it really is too late.

Figure out my shit – This means a lot of things, some of which I don’t want to get into on the interwebz, but I need to write this down and hold myself accountable and stop having such a “yeah, yeah” attitude about it. That means learning a few things, and maybe leaving some things behind.

Do all the things – This falls into the horse side of things too. I want to do the things. I don’t want to let fears of anxiety hold me back. I am really good at that. I need to break that cycle, badly.

There aren’t many things. But all of them have so many different aspirations behind them. I really just want to thoroughly enjoy anything and everything I can this year. And be happy while doing it. Which will mean spending time with my creatures, my husband, and whoever else comes along for the ride!

Why I don’t “do” goals.

So goals really are not my thing. For several reasons. Matt Brown did an interesting series on “Not focusing on your goals” that spoke to me. Granted I didn’t read every single word here because…well you guys know I don’t really read a ton of articles online. While I do intend to fully read the entire series, right now I am going to do some typing.

They do not always work out.

This is a big reason why I don’t do goals. I am fairly competitive. And not winning, or not getting everything done that I want to do really weighs on me. I am also fairly anxious and get stressed easily. So yeah writing down “goals” is a great idea…they just stress me out and then make me sad when I don’t accomplish them.

Not a trailer, but still a big purchase

Grandiose.

I like to be “go big, or go home” when I have written goals out. Like back in 2017 when I wrote about doing an ‘A’ jumper show, or buying a horse trailer. While yeah, those are things that I did WANT to do, they weren’t really something that was ever in my budget. Or things I was ready to get done. While they may not seem unrealistic to some people, they kind of were, and still are, to me.

Fixed, not growth.

In the first part of the series that Matt Brown did, he wrote a lot about fixed goals and growth goals. In the past I have almost strictly written fixed goals. I want to do do THIS which leads to disappointment when you don’t get THAT done. Yes, you may be closer to getting THAT done, but when you do not get IT done, and That was your goal, you tend to forget about what I did to get there.

I have learned, that for me personally, writing out these “definitive” or fixed goals just does not work. I need to focus more on the “How did I get to there” vs. the “I need to get to there” ideology. It works better for my brain.

I also need to not stress about what other people’s goals are compared to mine. Which I do a lot. Everyone’s journey is different. Everyone’s budget for things is different. I need to focus more on what I can do for Luna and I and not think about what other people are doing and comparing us to that.

always on a journey

So this year, I will be doing something a little “different” then what other bloggers do when it comes to “goals”.

Do you like to write out goals? Or do you like to do something different?

2017 Goals : Recap

Back at the end of 2016, I wrote about all of the things I wanted to get done this year. I had high hopes for this year. I wanted to do all the things and go do all the shows. Well…..let’s just say….we did none of the things and went to none of the shows.

The only time went out this year

Pony Goals

  • Go to an event : Did not happen.
  • Go to an A level jumper show : Did not happen.
  • Have a show season : Definietely did not happen.
  • Get more comfortable with height and oxers : Almost sort of happened?

My goals

  • Get healthy: HA.
  • Budget better : Meh. Kinda not really.
  • Buy a horse trailer : Did not happen. At all.

Some of my goals may have been a bit extravagant, I do admit that. Try and go big or go home, right ?

The last third of my year had been a write off for getting anything done. Since my car accident in August I’ve been to more appointments then the rest of my 27 Years ! Physio twice a week, dentist, doctor, you name it and I’ve probably been there. Which means little riding time.

Our jump coach “broke up” with us to take on a much better opportunity this fall. At almost the perfect time for us too. Luna had been telling me for a while things needed to change. And we are finally making that change.

My goals for 2018 are definitely going to be a bit more attainable and affordable. But thats for an other post !
